Overview
The Global Innovation Fund (GIF) is a social impact first investment vehicle that works with mission aligned development agencies to fund evidence based innovations benefiting the world's poorest populations. It is structured as a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity in England and Wales, funded by government development agencies including the UK, Australia, Canada, the US and Sweden, Dutch foundations, and corporate partners such as Unilever and Anglo American. GIF provides staged, flexible capital, grants, debt, equity and blended finance, moving innovations from early testing through to reaching millions of people, paired with technical assistance and access to networks of experts and investors.
Eligibility
- Open to social enterprises, for profit companies, nonprofits, government agencies, research institutions and international organizations from any country
- Innovation must target people earning less than $5 a day (PPP) in developing countries, with priority for impact on those earning under $2 a day or on vulnerable groups
- Innovation must be novel, supported by evidence of effectiveness, and have potential to scale to reach millions of people
- Theoretical research, single country only approaches, and projects involving luxury goods or human exploitation are excluded
Funding Purpose
Capital is meant to move an innovation through stages of proof and scale: a Pilot tranche of up to $230,000 for early stage testing, a Test and Transition tranche of up to $2.3 million for innovations with initial evidence of effectiveness, and a Scale tranche of up to $15 million to help a proven innovation reach millions of people.
Application Process
When open, applicants submit an initial application via the online form; if selected, they are invited to submit a full application covering team, budget and organisational details, followed by environmental, social, governance and anti-money laundering due diligence taking 6 to 9 months, and finally an investment decision. GIF was not accepting applications at the time of review; prospective applicants should monitor the GIF website and newsletter for upcoming calls.
