Portfolio for Impact and Innovation, PI2 (via U.S. International Development Finance Corporation)

Offered by U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC)

Overview

The Portfolio for Impact and Innovation (PI2) is an initiative of the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) that aims to bridge the financing gap for early-stage social enterprises with innovative solutions to challenges facing the developing world. It gives DFC flexibility to invest via debt, equity, and other mechanisms like insurance and technical assistance, with individual PI2 investments capped at $10 million.

Eligibility

  • Enterprise must demonstrate innovation, meaning a product, service, or business model that is innovative and/or targets a new customer segment or geography
  • Must show management capability based on team experience, background, and composition
  • Must have a track record of at least one year of operating history, beyond the proof of concept phase, with quantifiable results
  • Investment size sought must be $10 million or less

Funding Purpose

PI2 financing is meant to help early-stage social enterprises in the developing world that have struggled to access traditional financing due to their size, short track record, and novel approaches, bridging the gap between concept-stage funding and larger institutional investment.

Application Process

Applicants complete the DFC financing application through DFC's online Forms dashboard (dfc.gov/apply). An assigned DFC investment officer determines whether the project meets minimum impact and credit criteria for PI2, then the project goes through PI2's underwriting and approval process. DFC recommends contacting an investment officer in the relevant sector before starting the application.
